Seasonal update this week - Gooseberries, bunched beet & Gem Lettuces

31 May 2017

Ideal growing conditions continue, meaning that new produce continues to come on well this week.

The highlight, surely, are the first goosebrries in this week, from Cammas Hall, Essex  - the only British soft fruit that requires cooking down (and sugar).

Excellent as a compote, it is makes a really easy and satisfying gooseberry fool (just gooseberries, sugar & cream) - just 509p for this combination (saving 30p), and it makes a lovely pudding for 6 (you just need some nice shortbread to dunk into it)- please try it!

We have the first of the main-crop bunched beetroot in this week from halfway-into-retirement Roy & Rita at Wild Fields Farm. This new season beetroot will have lovely wholesome leaves that are really nutritious and can be steamed of pan-fried. Please dont just jettison them!

We now have plenty of new season leaf - spinach, chard, kale - most of it organic, all of it excellent value! And there are now plenty of gem lettuces too....

Our store of onions is coming to an end now - we have quite a few smaller ones available, which we are offering as pickling onions - undersized (and underloved usually), personally i find small onions more versatile - 1kg for just 69p.
