New Veggie arrivals: Broad Beans, New Season Kale

20 May 2015

The pleasant blend of wet & warmer weather continues - all good for the range of baby crops currently being transplanted from trays into the ground, which bodes well for the veggie outlook in the months ahead.

This week, we have the first of the broad beans in from Wild Fields Farm. They are still very young and to this extent you should really cook (steam / boil) and eat them in the pod. This is a bit of a one week phenomenon (from next week you will probably be better off discarding the shells.

For this reason, and for this week only, we have named them Mangetout Broad Beans. If you intend to shell them and discard the pods, please be warned that the beans are still small; we dont want you disappointed.

And we have the first of the spring sown Kale from Martin at Ripple Farm - this is a mixed kale bag, the curly kale is not quite ready. But still, it says everything about the popularity of Kale that Martin now aims to produce what was once a winter veggie pretty much all year round.
