Lots of Squashes: Uchiki Kuri, Sunshine, Pink Banana....

30 August 2011

September knocks, and we really come into the squash season now - a quick guide / summary of some currently available:

Pink Banana - deep orange flesh, good flavour, excellent for soups
Sunshine Squash - (aka Orange Kubocha) - a tender stringless flesh, provides a sweet nutty flavour as a side dish, as a filling for pies, as a soup squash, or for baking
Onion Squash - bright orange skin, flesh with a lovely nutty flavour
Sweet dumpling - orange flesh, ideal to stuff or bake whole.
Spaghetti Squash - a relatively light, bright yellow flesh, when cooked the flesh falls away into ribbons like spaghetti.
Sunburst Squash - look like mini UFOs, they are a light squash, ideal for baking whole, or chopping up and roasting, or steaming.
