Thursday's fishing - a dilemma surfaces...

15 September 2011

Thursdays fishing - we don't have any extra fish to offer today, here's why:

This afternoon Dylan's 4 boats were fishing mainly for Pollack, Whiting and Haddock (having reached their 2011 quota for Cod two weeks ago). Unexpectedly, they landed a total of 360kg of white fish, 300kg of which was Cod, which then had to be thrown back dead.

As the netting used to catch white fish is the same for all species, fishing for white fish at this time of year will always yield similar results. This is not only true of our fleet, but for all those fishing these waters - that's a lot of pointlessly killed Cod! Chris and Dylan have convinced the local fishing authorities to lobby in Brussels in the hope of extending the quota for Cod fishing off Cornwall - clearly there are more fish in these waters than first thought. Dylan, however is not expecting a favourable outcome.

This raises an interesting dilemma for us, if we want to continue selling white fish we will have to do it at the likely expense of lots of Cod that will be needlessly killed. Should we stop offering white fish for the next few months? Would you be happy on a fishy diet of Brill, Ray, Plaice etc.?

why not
it's a shame, the legislation it's insane!but what i'm asking is,is it possible istead of throwing away that fish,to give it away for free?offering it to the people at the port?...it's a shame to throw away so much fish!of course is better to stop to offer white fish if you cannot do anything against this barbaire, why this is happening?i mean, aren't we enaught responsable for the destruction of most of the animal in the world,we can just try to think about what we are doing with our insane laws??
