We have the first of the fennel and Radicchio lettuce beginning this week, two flavoursome veggies to enjoy as the summer kicks in!
Radicchio, also known as Italian Chicory, has a pretty sharp and bitter taste, which is lovely if used sparingly in salads. But it is a leaf that is just as good when cooked, and actually then becomes more mellow.
It makes a lovely & colourful addition to into a tray of roasted veg (and so is added to our summer roasting veg bundle this week), if you add it to the roasting tray 20 minutes before the end (giving it a good stir in, so that it is seasoned up and coated in oil).
A wider veggie update - our Kent & Essex growers are getting pretty desparate for rain - we have been due to have a crop of sugarsnap peas coming through, but they have been written off by the lack of rain, and the first line of maincrop carrots have not germinated well for the same reason: the travails of veg growing.
